Lake ice-out dates, or the dates of ice break-up, are the annual dates in spring when winter ice cover leaves a lake. Several studies in the last 15 years have used lake ice-out dates in the Northern Hemisphere as measures of climatic variability and change. Very few lakes in New England have been analyzed, even though a remarkable amount of lake ice-out data have been recorded and saved in New England during the past two centuries. Changes in water resources…
While we didn’t get the full impact of Hurricane Irene this weekend, Lake Winona is feeling her effect. Following a beautiful, calm day on Saturday, rain started to come down around 8 pm and didn’t stop until 4 pm on Sunday. Don Thibeault, who maintains a log of lake level measurements indicated by the boat launch water level markings, noted markings before and after the major rainfall. In less than 24 hours the lake had risen 10″. He also noted…
Last week, Linda Heminway saw a single adult Bald Eagle with white head and tail feathers (mature, at least 4 years old to have the white) and this morning there was an adult accompanied by a fledgling immature eagle. She has been on Winona for 56 years and has never seen a Bald Eagle fly over the lake. Both sightings occurred mid-to-late morning and they flew from the West, went over Boulder Island and then headed east from that direction….

The decisions the New Hampshire Senate makes about the budget approved earlier this month by the House of Representatives will determine the fate of two programs important to the preservation and protection of state lakes, including Lake Winona. The Volunteer Lake Assessment Program and the Lakes Management and Protection Program are among five DES water quality monitoring and management programs that will end on June 30 if the House budget is adopted in its current form. Both programs are active…
DES posted their final decision on the lake level yesterday. It calls for Waukewan to be at 540′ and a draw down to 538.5′ after Columbus Day. The plan depends very heavily on quick and aggressive reaction by the dam operators to rain events in order to maintain this level. Whether or not this is a reasonable expectation, time will tell. Here is the full report: http://des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/dam/documents/2011-waukewan.pdf.
The first lake resident meeting will be help on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 10 AM. Jean Chute is once again graciously providing her home for the meeting. Agenda items include: update on interim lake level decision; motion to update association bylaws; lake water quality testing; skiing/tubing law review (a representative from Marine Patrol will attend); and new business items from residents.
Just when we thought spring may be just around the corner, we get hit with more snow. At least 3-4 inches fell today.
