For decades the Loon Preservation Committee has been putting leg bands on NH loons to track long-term habits and population.

Our male loon who has nested on our lake successfully since 2017 sports green and silver bands.  The male loon is verified, with photo evidence, to have returned this season.  The current nesting female has not yet been banded and is a newcomer. 

The female that was our male loon’s long-time mate did not reappear on Lake Winona this spring. Our Loon Center biologist feels that there is a possibility that our former resident female might be nesting over on Lake Waukewan.  We have no proof.  She has left leg orange over blue dots and on the right leg red dot over silver.  If anyone spots her and is lucky enough to get a photograph pass the information along to the Loon Center.
