For decades the Loon Preservation Committee has been putting leg bands on NH loons to track long-term habits and population.

The male loon who has nested on Lake Winona successfully since 2017 has green and silver bands.  The male loon has been verified, with photo evidence, to have returned this season.  The current nesting female is a newcomer who has not yet been banded. 

The female that was our male loon’s long-time mate did not reappear on Lake Winona this spring. Our Loon Center biologist thinks our former resident female might be nesting over on Lake Waukewan.  We have no proof.  She has left leg orange over blue dots and on the right leg red dot over silver.  If anyone spots her and is lucky enough to get a photograph pass the information along to the Loon Center.
