Bernard Fred Avery, 65, of West Shore Road, died November 22, 2012, at his home after a battle with cancer. Born in Plymouth, NH on September 18, 1947, he was the son of Bernard F. and Christine (Lagill) Avery. He grew up in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School. Fred attended the UNH Thompson School and Gunstock Junior College. He has been a resident of the Ashland and New Hampton area for most of his life. Fred worked as…
The Kayak & Canoe Race, held on September 1, was a huge success, and quite a site the 10 minutes prior to race to watch so many kayakers paddling in from all sides of the lake. Unfortunately, I did a terrible job of getting names of the kayakers. My apologies for not getting this posted sooner. Water skiers on Lake Winona now have an official slalom course, thanks to West Shore Rd owner Jason St. Gelais. The ski course, approved by Marine Patrol and effective August 31, 2012, is located on an 800′ stretch of water near The Anchorage. Per the NH Department of Safety permit, the ski course can only be operated Monday – Thursday from 5 p.m. to sunset. “I think this is a huge step in the right direction for the lake,” shared St. Gelais,…
This very large snapping turtle paid a visit to our compost pile a couple of weeks ago. His (or her) shell was about 12″ in length.
A local Amphicar owner dropped into Lake Winona this afternoon for a cruise. Did you know: Only 4,000 Amphicars were built from 1961 to 1965 by a German manufacturer who targeted the U.S. market and 700 of them survive more than 40 years later.

The Waukewan and Winona Watershed Protective Association is hosting a free educational seminar on how you can prevent the introduction of exotic weeds and other invasives to your lake. With the rise in infestations among NH lakes its especially important for shore owners to know how to identify harmful exotic weeds and other invasive plants. If spotted early, many of these invasives can be eradicated before they become a serious and uncontrollable threat to our lake. The seminar will be held August…
