Lake ice-out dates, or the dates of ice break-up, are the annual dates in spring when winter ice cover leaves a lake. Several studies in the last 15 years have used lake ice-out dates in the Northern Hemisphere as measures of climatic variability and change. Very few lakes in New England have been analyzed, even though a remarkable amount of lake ice-out data have been recorded and saved in New England during the past two centuries. Changes in water resources…
While we didn’t get the full impact of Hurricane Irene this weekend, Lake Winona is feeling her effect. Following a beautiful, calm day on Saturday, rain started to come down around 8 pm and didn’t stop until 4 pm on Sunday. Don Thibeault, who maintains a log of lake level measurements indicated by the boat launch water level markings, noted markings before and after the major rainfall. In less than 24 hours the lake had risen 10″. He also noted…
Thank you to Ray Paquette for sending me the link to the NH Fish & Game’s bathymetric charts for area lakes. Here is the link to download the map for Lake Winona.
Close to 40 owners and their guests attended this year’s LWIA Summer Social and Potluck. The fabulous weather had everyone in good spirits for a lake picnic. The event is also a wonderful opportunity to socialize, meet new faces and get reacquainted with other owners on the lake. A big thank you to The Anchorage for hosting and to LWIA President Don Thibeault for taking on the grill. The Association provided hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers, as well as lemonade, for…
Summer is, unfortunately, quickly coming to an end. To date less than half of lake owners have sent in their $15 contribution to the Lake Winona Improvement Association fund. Your support is greatly needed to fund regular lake water quality testing, beaver population controls and removal of dams, annual support of the NH Lakes Association and Loon Preservation Committee, and development and distribution of information to all lake owners regarding lake issues through use of our annual newsletter and this website….
The LWIA’s Summer Social and Potluck lunch will be held on Saturday, August 20 at noon. The Anchorage Lodge has graciously offered their location for the event, which will allow us to host the event rain or shine. We’ll eat promptly at 12:15, then review a few business matters at 1 pm. Burgers and drinks are being provided by the Association. Owners are asked to bring their own place setting (plate and utensils) and a dish to share, as well…
Last week, Linda Heminway saw a single adult Bald Eagle with white head and tail feathers (mature, at least 4 years old to have the white) and this morning there was an adult accompanied by a fledgling immature eagle. She has been on Winona for 56 years and has never seen a Bald Eagle fly over the lake. Both sightings occurred mid-to-late morning and they flew from the West, went over Boulder Island and then headed east from that direction….
